Jesus christ, what happened to you?
When I first saw the trailer for this, I did not think it looked good. Since it seemed to be advertised as a straight up horror movie about hide-and-seek, it looked like another bad Blumhouse gore-fest. For whatever reason, I decided to check it out when it released on DVD and digital, and I will say I wish I watched it in theaters.
Ready or Not is a refreshingly original horror comedy that knows how dumb it is and plays into it in the most fun of ways. It's a gripping and sometimes horrifying horror movie, but it's also extremely silly and blood-filled that it's tough to take too seriously. It doesn't overstay it's welcome, and while I'd love to see way more of this world, I don't know what more to add. It balances it's polar opposite tones perfectly, the action is bloody brutal, and the finale might just be my absolute favorite ever.
It has a fantastic cast, too. Samara Weaving is fantastic as our protagonist, and while she usually plays the craziest one in the movie, she fits this role perfectly. She does get to go fully batshit crazy towards the end, but she's still fantastic in the beginning too. Adam Brody plays his usual charming self, something I can't possibly dislike. The rest of the cast plays the rest of the psychotic family really well. They can all carry a joke and are terrifyingly superb villains.
Seriously, Ready or Not is such a fun movie that still isn't afraid in the slightest to get extremely dark. It's one-of-a-kind in the best of ways, and easily one of my favorite movies.
