I have just rewatched Friday the 13th Parts 1, 2 & 3 in preparation for the Hoop-Tober 3.0 challenge and my list which commits me to watching Parts IV to VIII
In my review of Friday the 13th I got a bit ranty about the irony of people who accuse the original of being clichéd and derivative when it was such a seminal film in horror history and specifically the slasher sub-genre. I then proceeded to accuse Part 2 of being at the top of a slippery slope toward making the slasher tropes as tired and clichéd as they are today.
Unfortunately Part 3 continues building momentum down that slippery slope… This time we deviate from the Summer Camp and Camp Counsellors set up; instead we have a group of friends staying in a cabin in the woods near the site of the prior two tragedies. Unfortunately the cabin is not big enough to accommodate sufficient numbers of young people to sustain 90 minutes of slashing so a biker gang (of three?!) seeking vengeance against the college kids is crow-barred into the plot to up the body count. Yep. I said it was a slippery slope…
There is still fun to be had though and not least because this film suffered the ignominious 80s fate of Part 3 inevitably being in 3D. I propose a drinking game that has viewers drinking every time something pointy is waved at the camera; sticks and weapons are thrust, yo-yos are yo’d and spliffs are offered all to exploit the magic of 3D cinema.
Roll on Part 4…
