As someone who has been listening to the Sparks for twenty years or so I'm glad they are having a bit of a resurgence. I was also surprised by just how "Sparks" this film actually was. Anyone who has spent time with their music knows that its primarily quirky, absurdist songs filled with repetition, call and response and classical music flourishes. That's essentially this film in a nutshell and honestly that's pretty cool. Here's the thing though. A Sparks album is 45 minutes. This move is two hours and twenty minutes long. That's like listening to three Sparks albums back to back. That's A LOT of Sparks and I'm a fan. Sure the visuals are cool and Driver is good but the story is honestly fairly mundane at its core. None of these aspects are deep enough to really carry a film of this length so you're again stuck with mainly the music. Three in a row.. I wouldn't go so far as to say this is a bad movie and I admire a lot of its aspects but I also don't think it's a very good one either.
