The Wonders 2014
I've been in a movie slump this past month—I want to watch too much but when I try to pick something, nothing really interests me, so I've mostly been reading and watching TV instead. But I should've known Alice Rohrwacher would fix that, at least momentarily. Le meraviglie is languid and tacticle—it takes its time to show us these characters and their environment, allows us to bask in the beams of light and dust, in the honey and the bees, the…

The Rains Came 1939
The narrative is sort of a dual-track redemption story for two unserious Westerners (Myrna Loy and George Brent) who find purpose and love in the wake of a natural disaster in India. The first half is mostly Brent's story, while the (stronger) second half largely focuses on Loy and her relationship with a young Indian doctor (Tyrone Power).
And that's all fine. But what truly sets this apart is the staggering midpoint disaster sequence, where a devastating earthquake hits just…

Autopsy 1975
Doctor studying suicides gets engulfed in a murder mystery when her father's fiancee commits suicide.
Holy shit Italian cinema, you really don't think highly of women in this one eh? Is it endering to call the girl you're dating "Ice Queen" because she doesn't put out? I didn't think so.
I don't think I've seen a movie where a race car driver becomes a priest to atone for his sins after killing two spectators during a race.
I was curious to see how this ended as the film did pull off their red herrings well.
It's a one and done for me.

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck 2023
This was one of the few instances in which I’ve read the book before the movie (other than Harry Potter lol). But one of my New Year’s resolutions that I’m actually trying to accomplish this year is to read more so I actually read this book earlier this year. I also remember seeing the trailer for this last fall in an AMC but never actually saw it get a theatrical run, at least not in my area.
Regardless, this was…

F9 2021
sorry but i'm gonna need that cardi b's girl gang spin off asap! and sure, they send a car to space but the funniest thing this movie gets away with is the fact that tokyo drift allegedly takes place in 2014 when sean was 17 and then only 7 years later, at the ripe age of 24, he looks like a middle aged man. fucking incredible, man.

The Little Mermaid 2023
I don’t know when, I don’t know how,
But I know something’s starting right now
Watch and you’ll see, some day I’ll be
Part of your world.Rob Marshall was right, Halle Bailey has set the bar very high.

Air 2023
I enjoyed this much more than I expected, because even though I don't really care about basketball and don't have strong sneaker brand loyalty (or even appreciation), I probably should have expected it because I do enjoy a good marketing flick, and Ben Affleck, and Viola Davis, and crowd-pleasing dad movies. I want a pair of nikes now.
Update: I got nikes and I can never say I'm immune to marketing ever again.

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift 2006
I find it hilarious that arguably the best installment of this franchise is the one that doesn’t feature most of the “family.”
This is such a big improvement from the original. The dialogue is still a tad on the corny side at times but not nearly to the degree as the original. The cinematography was so much crisper. This features a low-key banging soundtrack too. And the Bow Wow appearance doesn’t feel nearly as cringe as the Ja Rule one (who…

Nate Bargatze: The Greatest Average American 2021
This is a reminder of why I wish I made time to catch more of these specials as they come out to get a better appreciation for the topical humor. He had a lot of COVID references that were still funny but probs would’ve slapped a lot more had I seen this 2 years ago.
Random tidbits: That stage intro with his daughter was super cute too. I also dug the shoes he was wearing. The repeated helicopter interruptions were…
