the zone of interest reminds us that films should make us feel. cinema can help us communicate that which feels impossible to articulate. cinema can show us a part of history we never thought to remember.
it can help us realize the bleakness and discomfort of truth and how deeply important it is to remember the past. cinema calls to how essential it is to reflect on all of the manmade atrocity we have and continue to participate in. furthermore it can act as a mirror to remind us of our own complicity in the history we are making today.
i dont know if i loved it but having lived with loss and grief and dealt with it in my own comedy of horrors fashion, i laughed myself to tears multiple times throughout beau is afraid.
joaquin pheonix was phenomenal and the project itself was a massive multimedia and creative undertaking.
the film was cynical and indulgent and aster’s treatment of women continues to be reductive and generally pretty offensive! nothing new there! but i had a blast and i probably dont ever need to watch it again.
