“i tell you, if it were up to just me…”

already remembered this being one of the greatest films i’ve ever seen, but getting to experience this on a print—getting to hear and practically feel a packed theater grow increasingly rapt and let out multiple, genuinely startled gasps at the lulling, hypnotic audiovisual rhythms being so methodically yet ultimately thrillingly upended by the restless, breathless tension carried in every lingering composition and meticulous edit; potatoes being peeled and overcooked, brushes…

    “are my methods unsound?”

always great to watch this and remember what an absurd fucking miracle it is that this is not only as good as it is (aka probably the greatest movie of its genre), but that it even exists at all, much like basically every film coppola has made—but this was my first film of his, and (i know that i still have to finish the godfather trilogy but) i can’t imagine this ever not being my favorite of his. for better or worse, i don’t know if there’s any other war movie as captivating and strangely, deeply human as this.

    “cuisine is not the movies.”

the premise of this documentary and knowing that it was four hours long had me very excited and intrigued going in, but i don’t even know if i can put into words how genuinely enthralling and fascinating the experience of actually watching this truly is. i’m a firm believer that one of the most basic yet consistently greatest joys we can get out of film, fiction or nonfiction, is getting to watch people be good at…

navigating, language and street, to nowhere. that grieg fraser or roger deakins poll asking which was the greatest to do it is so funny when robby müller is right here lmao.

    “a dream unfolds.”

realistically speaking probably not a good movie, but just so strange and fascinating as an artistic achievement that it kinda circles back around to being almost really great. idk i don’t make the rules.
