    Simultaneously interesting and tedious.

Why this gets such low ratings beats me. I think it's a tremendously good musical, arguably the best-looking British musical ever filmed. The sets...the colours...the music...the David Bowie! The recreation of Soho in '50s London style is fantastic (though obviously exaggerated, it is nearly on the level of Blade Runner in terms of production design), and the story even tackles some social issues that are still very relevant today such as racism and shady property developers. If you enjoy films like West Side Story, The Young Girls of Rochefort, or Strictly Ballroom, then you should love this as well.

Neil Burger has produced another fairly tasty burger. Although I did enjoy the trailer for this film, it made me slightly worried that the full movie might end up being too much aimed at teenagers, but it turns out to be a more sober experience than I was expecting and there is some depth here behind the basic "Lord of the Flies in space" premise. But as I said about Stowaway last week, bad things always seem to happen on these cinematic missions into the stars....

A visually refreshing update of a classic English novel. Lily James is as good as ever.
