    Invasion of the Body Snatchers

I've not watched this for a few years and I watched the original for the first time a few months ago so I expected my rating to go down but no, this is still a perfect film. The entire concept of waking up one morning to find the people you love are no longer the same is something that genuinely terrifies me and this film is a massive reason why.

The utterly mesmerising opening sequence explains the set up without…

    Pan's Labyrinth

Guillermo Del Toro is a master of controlling the viewers emotions and placing characters with very real emotions and feelings in fantastical situations. He uses this contrast between real and fantastical to create moving and thematically rich movies that can be read on many levels.

This might be one of the best looking films I've ever seen. I love the creature designs and the hybrid use of CGI, puppetry and actors to create these amazing monsters. I much prefer practical…

I've seen a lot of divisive opinions and hate for this and while I don't see it as particularly groundbreaking or important, I still had a really fun time watching it and you can't deny that certain aspects are really good.

For one, I think the film looks fantastic. A lot of great shots and just an overall polished look to the film. The colours are vibrant and the setting is gorgeous so visually it ticks a lot of boxes.…

When I reviewed 9 a few months ago, I was disappointed as there was something about the aesthetic that I found so appealing but the 3D animation fell flat for me and I would've much preferred a stop motion version. I also felt that film was a bit too dark for kids but not satisfying enough for adults. With Mad God, I've realised it is the film I always wanted 9 to be.

This feels fantastic to watch knowing that…

    The House

The House is mostly good but falls in to the same trap as other anthology films I'm fond of in that the progression of the different stories just gets worse and worse.

Cat's Eye and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs come to mind. Cat's Eye has a phenomenal opening act that I still want to see adapted in to a feature length film, I great second act that just about manages to keep the film alive and then suffers from…

After watching and really enjoying The 39 Steps, I recently treated myself to an Alfred Hitchcock 20 film blu-ray boxset to revisit some of his films I've seen many years ago and dive in to the rest of his filmography and I started with what is already an established favourite of mine.

I can only imagine how insane it must have been to see this film when it first came out as the direction and editing are truly groundbreaking. We…
