Contact ★★★½

poignant and at times impressive for 1997. a relatively simple story told kind of confusingly (tom skerrit's character had no reason to exist, should have just been combined with james woods and the whole two spaceships thing should have been left out) and coated with a thick layer of classic 90's schmaltz. but surprisingly it really works, walks a fine line between a hollywood scifi and an exploration of the nature of faith vs science. i can't help but feel like this concept was imrpoved in later years, but movies like arrival, interstellar most certainly learned a lot from this film.
