Woah... seven hours.
To be quite honest, I’ve seen 90-minute movies that were harder to get through than this. Perhaps it’s because Tarr guides the story extremely well, but this didn’t feel like seven hours. It was amazing to slowly discover its secrets.
This is not an easy movie, that’s for sure. I struggled to really understand what Tarr was going for in some moments, and perhaps trying to do that was a mistake. People talk about Sátántangó as something that works first on the soul and the body, not the mind.
It’s a towering work of art. Something that amazed me with each step it took as it defined and redefined itself. It’s an experience I’ll never forget - hard to forget such a long movie, though.
