    Graveyard of Honor 2002

Miike honestly has to be one of the most interesting directors working right now. Not only is his work ethic insane (over a hundred films made in the span of 3 decades, eight in 2002 alone), but there's this unpredictability in regards to the genre he tackles. Graveyard of Honor is a departure of sorts from his usual hyperactive style, and here he opts instead for a more raw and gritty approach to the yakuza thriller, and of all the…

A prevailing theme throughout the Coen brother’s filmography has been their unequivocal embrace of the tragic fallibility of their characters. Deeply flawed characters whereby the viewer can invariably see parts of themselves in each, whether they're the good guys, the bad guys, or some muddled mixture of both. Inside Llewyn Davis is just that, one of those beautiful creations that’s equal parts comedy and tragedy, and works exceedingly well on both levels.

Oscar Isaac gives a brilliant performance as the…

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

"The sword is the soul. Study the soul to know the sword. Evil mind, evil sword."

The Sword of Doom by Kihachi Okamoto is a bloody samurai film that explores violence, depravity, and their relationship to madness. The film follows Ryunosuke, whose swordsmanship has given him exceptional fighting talent, but whose lack of a moral backbone begins to take its told. He starts the film sane but evil, and ends the film in a thrilling climax of violent psychosis.

"And what haunts me, is that in all the faces of all the bears that Treadwell ever filmed, I discover no kinship, no understanding, no mercy. I see only the overwhelming indifference of nature. To me, there is no such thing as a secret world of the bears. And this blank stare speaks only of a half-bored interest in food. But for Timothy Treadwell, this bear was a friend, a savior." -- Werner Herzog, Grizzly Man

While it may not be the easiest film to get ahold of in the world, I'm utterly stunned by how little attention this film has gotten. A gloriously stylistic and yet shatteringly depressing film about how terrifying co-dependency can really be.

This film communicates feelings of being alienated from the rest of the world, thinking that once you've found someone to depend on you don't need to look after yourself anymore, and feeling as if your parents and family members…
