WHATEVER THE WORLD DID TO DESERVE MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN, CAN WE NOT WAIT TEN YEARS TO DO IT AGAIN?!
It was everything I ever wanted. I don't know I needed it but I absolutely did. Do you remember when we all said the world needed Paddington? Here We Go Again possesses the same kind of magic. It's sure not perfect but it a) didn't need to be and b) was never going to be.
It's glitzy, it's glamorous, it's emotional, it's funny, it's an unadulterated fun for every single second and in every single frame. It's like a series of music videos connected by an admittedly flimsy story but no one came to Mamma Mia 2 for the script: they came for the glitter, the music, the campness and the spectacle and it is served up in abundance.
Lily James is the biggest delight, Julie Walters is hilariously relatable, Christine Baranski gets the best one-liners, Amanda Seyfried gives it some dramatic weight, Meryl Streep more than leaves her mark and Cher is everything you want her to be. The men throw themselves into it and the rest of the 'young' cast do a terrific job embodying these characters.
I LOVED EVERY SINGLE MINUTE OF IT. Super Trouper is peak cinema. And honestly, the moment the piano roll for Dancing Queen started I combusted with so much excitement that I knocked my drink over. It could have caused me to break my neck on my way out and it would have honestly been worth it.
