After "body horror", it's now time for "subjectivity horror". One of the best surprises of the recent years, UPGRADE uses some of the most mechanic plot devices ever (dead wife, revenge, evil genius, big speech before killing someone) and creates something electrifying, thought-provoking, and with a lot to say about the contemporary world.
The throwback to a kind of 80s style sci-fi involving trashy self-awareness, an extensive amount of gore and creative cyberpunk aesthetics (rifles inside the arms!) is paired up with terrific fight sequences, funny jokes, and a clear grasp of the metaphysical dimensions of transhumanism. The narrative portrayal of AI is on point, and leaves the whole movie with a meta-textual quality - especially with that ending. The perfect definition of a FUN film, even with some gloomy dystopian undertones that stay with you.
