“You are not the cat. You are inside the cat.”

I love immersive theatre. I worked as an assistant stage manager on a new work last year about poetess Edna St. Vincent Millay called "Words Like Fresh Skin". I recently just saw a downtown production of The Crucible that was immersive. These productions, encapsulating their style of theatre, feel voyeuristic. You watch scenes of someone’s lives play out from all angles, in a way the proscenium prohibits. Whether you are…

    Showgirls

There are two incredibly different ways to talk about Showgirls: The movie and The culture .

    THE MOVIE

The movie itself is interesting and poignant if it existed in its own bubble. In shedding light on a sexually explicit industry whose male executives take advantage of and exploit its women workers, interesting commentary on gender and sexuality are made (albeit to varying degrees). Richard Jenkins and Jayne Houdyshell. Holy shit.

Really enjoyed the more dark, apprehensive worry present through this entire film. It feels like a dream many ways. Fittingly, I guess. The walls are so vague and nondescript and only have detail when in focus. Light and shadow exist in such strong senses. I wish the parts near the ending didn’t feel like those two minutes of Mark Morris’ GLORIA where the lights go out… selfishly just to get a better look…

This movie feels like it would have gotten a long standing ovation at Sundance in the early 00’s.

Terrifying and lyrical. Graceful, yet painful.

Kristen Stewart is such a force. I really just constantly fall in love with her as an actor in every role I see her in.

    Johnny Greenwood’s score fucking slapped.
    Cinematography also fucking slapped.

    FASHION!

I have a lot to say about this film.

I saw the Off-Broadway revival of ‘Tick, Tick… BOOM!’ in 2016 and was blown away. As a show, it made me further understand Jonathan Larson as a writer, and person, in a way that blew my then-sixteen year old mind. So this gave me really high expectations for this movie.

In many ways, this show is a love letter not just to Jonathan Larson, but a mid-pandemic love letter to the…
