Persona ★★★★★

To help contextualize the themes of doubling in the works of Margarethe von Trotta (and to help set up a documentary she made on Bergman), the Professor I'm working for decided to screen Persona, which is fine by me. I just wrote a lot about this movie for the Bergman marathon at my local art-house theater so I'm not terribly inclined to add a lot here. What I will say is the film still holds up brilliantly as an exploration of identity, feminine agency, and how one grapples with the horrors of the world. Bergman brings a special intensity to Persona through his editing and striking shot choices, and the film's meta commentary on cinema is fascinating. A masterpiece, to be sure.
