In the Mood for Love

In the Mood for Love ★★★★★

In the Mood for Love is one of the most staggeringly beautiful films I've ever seen. Beautiful in every aspect of its production. The cinematography—a seamless combination of Christopher Doyle's free form style and Mark Lee Ping-Bing's more slow-paced, fluid movements—is breathtaking. I want to live in the colour palette. Wong Kar-wai regulars William Chang and Wong Ming-Lam are in total control of the edit, creating an incredibly hypnotic pace that wonderfully captures the film's exploration of memory. Tony Leung Chiu-Wai and Maggie Cheung give nuanced, gorgeous performances. Their intentions are, like everything else in the film, told with such a subtle touch. All these elements are masterfully juggled by Wong Kar-wai, his unique approach to scripting and his lengthy filming process elevating the film to something truly special. In the Mood for Love broke my heart, especially in its final act. Its last twenty minutes are so brutally honest and hit me like a ton of bricks. Absolute perfection.
