The second Schlesinger movie that I’ve watched this week - it’s really made me appreciate how well he’s able to capture locations and communities. In the case of Far from the Madding Crowd, it’s one of Hardy’s fictional valleys, but in Yanks it’s something altogether different: a northern town and the American military base stationed there. You almost begin to get a mental map of the town, that’s how clearly Schlesinger guides you. Yay for him! Mayhaps a new favourite director.
