As I've said before, Germany makes the best war films. No glory and heroism, just death. Men killing each other because they're been directed to do so by pompous generals sitting in manor houses eating five course meals.
And there is death of every flavour here, shooting, crushing, exploding, stabbing, at one point there is even death by fork. It is relentlessly bleak. It's also beautifully made, though you won't get much pleasure from it.
A good war film doesn't lionise soldiers, it pities them and All Quite on the Western Front does it admirably.
