Such a lovely and heartfelt mom-and-daughter story but oh so much more than that. Lady Bird also shines reflecting the generational conflict between the two women and showing how, such an universal feeling, sometimes living in a "smaller" city just doesn't feel enough for youngster. I certainly feel this way and I'm much older than Christine "Lady Bird."
There's plenty to love here, especially how well Gerwig captures the whole adolescent drama, emotion, and heartbreak, but perhaps my favorite detail was when she's already moved to NYC, gets black-out drunk, and wakes up in a hospital. Christine sees a kid with a serious face injury next to his mom. This tiny image illustrates perfectly what her own mother said earlier, about how some people have it a lot worse, so just be grateful.
We're all doing our best. Let's keep at it.
