The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 ★★

I was pulling my hair out trying to review this one because my feelings on this film basically shifted on a scene by scene basis.

There are some scenes in 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2’ which are wonderful but then there are other scenes where this movie is just complete and utter garbage.

There are scenes which have that great, amped up, 80s slasher sequel feel which all culminates in a finale of chainsaw duels and Dennis Hopper chewing the fucking scenery until there is nothing left in a wonderfully elaborate new Sawyer lair. Hopper seems to have inspired every performance Nicolas Cage has ever done with his portrayal of Lefty and his path of vengeance. But then there are scenes where Tobe Hooper spits on the legacy of ‘The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’ by resorting to retreading chunks of that original film but playing it as a comedy, rather than a horror. Comedy is subjective sure but I didn’t laugh once.

This is how the film went for me basically throughout, one scene I’d be all like “Oh wow I am actually really enjoying this!” to “Oh fuck off!” to “Oh shit that was awesome!” to “How the fuck did the same man direct both movies, it feels like he has never even seen the original film!” and round and round I went. I guess if you have no real respect for the original ‘The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’ and like stereotypical 80s slasher sequels, you’ll probably have a lot of fun with this, everyone else should probably give this a miss.
