    Mistress America

    ★★★★½

Probably my favorite baumbach and I strongly suspect that it's because it's average baumbach + a hefty dose of gerwig. Fuck she's gifted.

  • Total Recall

    Total Recall

    ★★★½

In this movie Arnold Schwarzenegger wears an early version of those mission impossible masks but it's robotic to make himself look like a chubby middle aged woman but it malfunctions so instead he shouts surprise! and uses the robo head as a makeshift bomb

Phew. That's story-telling. A general, universal story told in a hyper-specific, thoughtful, affectionate way. The scenery. Those long takes. That peach. Stuhlbarg hit me stuhl-hard.

Also, damn sexy. V grateful to Timothee for bringing the sexy back to us skinny awkward guys.

  • A Ghost Story

    A Ghost Story

    ★★½

I'm am easily impressed movie viewer. And there are allot a lot of people who--probably rightly--are/will be impressed by the compositions, lingering shots, general melancholy. But god damn I'm not one of them. Hit me as super self-conscious, look-ma!, self-impressed.

I Get Overwhelmed is a good song tho

JFC gosling gives the most harrowing, physically uncomfortable, red performance and it worked me the fuck over.

V serious satirical take on a v silly premise. I'm missing something here.

  • Fantastic Mr. Fox

    Fantastic Mr. Fox

Willem Dafoe is a horny rat villain and Jason S is a sad little boy who's not very athletic

Poor girl next to me kept putting her head between her knees and I don't know why but I hope she's okay

What a weird stew. Very glad Margot Robbie bounced back from being disgracefully wasted and leered at by David Ayers. Janney's so fun. Could not connect to Stan at all.
But, the mash of devices--kind of framed, inconsistent fourth wall breaks, talking heads, pseudo archival footage, serious and cutesy title cards. Yuck.

So much fun watching good people who are good at what they do be good people who are good at what they do. Plus, all that doubles as a potent fuck you to the shambling, terminally stupid current president, so that's double fun.

BTW, was not expecting actual emotion and then Meryl Streep walked down stairs near other women and I totally burst into tears

  • Big Fish

    Big Fish

    ★★★½

I liked looking at it but could not, for the life of me, feel anything about it. The point is... Stories are fun?

Danny DeVito made me laugh though, especially with greatest showman fresh in mind

  • The Shape of Water

    The Shape of Water

She masturbates in the tub because she's only sexually gratified and generally happy in water!!!

Noticed lots more weak  plotting--her thing with shoes that's dropped, how Strickland knows where every body is/lives, the clunky device with the docks on the calendar-- but I could not care less

  • The Killing of a Sacred Deer

The Killing of a Sacred Deer

I like walking and eating and am glad I can do both
