Although I'm not sure this will age as well as the other Tom Holland Spidey movies for me, it does make me appreciate all of the other movies after getting to revisit all of the heroes and villains of the past. As perhaps the biggest movie of 2021, it's a fitting representative for my big recap of the year in movies.

One of the most underrated comedies of the last couple of decades, this really is a perfect mixture of heard and comedy. This is one that that never really gets old for me and when I rewatched movies from ten years ago for my Hindsight project this remained toward the top of my list.

While this is neither an unserious film nor a comedy, this film is ultimately a slow burn of a joke. And I love that a major movie would have the confidence to do that. The ending is a unique flavor of, "what the hell was that?" to leave the film. Usually it's much more of an ambiguity or a shock, but here it is a left turn in the statement of the character and the culture she comes out of.

I am an absolute sucker for these true stories of reporters tracking down a story. This works really well by never showing the actual assaults, but letting us get to know the people in the story. Weinstein and other predators aren't given the spotlight to show their faces in likeness, only voices. Incredibly moving direction, and a very smartly cast film.

This sets itself apart in the MI series of movies through its visual storytelling and the Hitchcock-like suspense mixed with a mini-Ocean’s 11-style heist factor. The cold open is one of the best in the series. Ving Rhames finally gets a shot at a little spot to shine by showing that he is a bit of the heart of the team, while simultaneously showing his character’s technical expertise. I’m glad this movie doesn’t fall into being a sloppy romantic triangle around Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt. This could really find its way getting bumped up to five stars for just the love of movies.

You can’t have a Host without a Parasite. I tried really hard to come in to this movie cold and based on the name alone I figured it would be one of the Bong science fiction movies like The Host, Okja or Snowpiecer. I didn’t realize it would be one of his straight thrillers like Mother or Memories of a Murder until I was walking up to the ticket counter and heard an old man with his grandson giving him…
