Mark: Mm. Yes, absolutely. On paper, that is. And I think I could plan one better than most people... but I doubt if I could carry it out.
Tony: Oh? Why not?
Mark: Well, in stories, things turn out the way the author wants. And in real life, they don't always.
It's interesting that I loved this movie and Promising Young Women because this film critiques the concept of PYW. Carey Mulligan executed her plans perfectly in every scene of PYW while this entire movie rests on the concept that there is no such thing as a perfect plan.
This film is fantastic. It might just be one of my favourite screenplays ever with every scene advancing the story and adding a new layer to the situation. Every scene you have a moment of realization of how this film is now advancing and you are shocked everytime.
Vertigo, Rear Window, and Psycho are Hitchcock's most well known films, but it seems to be the lesser known murder mysteries that leave me speechless. There isn't a perfect murder, but this is a perfect film about murder.
