Jojo Rabbit

Jojo Rabbit ★★★★★

I have seen this film a few times and I always walk away with a new favorite scene.

On this rewatch I loved the scene where Jojo is sitting in the room with Elsa as he writes down all these ridiculous stories about Jews. Elsa tells him that Jews are attracted to shiny things and Jojo quickly adds that they are also attracted to ugly things. Jews love ugly things.

Jojo turns to his left and sees himself in the mirror with his deranged face from the explosion earlier. He is reminded that he doesn't fit in with the other Nazi's and no one seems to like him.

He goes downstairs to talk to his imaginary friend Hitler. He reminds himself that he is getting attached to the Jew but quickly rationalizes it as getting information. He then asks Hitler if he thinks he is ugly and Hitler instantly says yes. This is the first moment in the film where Jojo imagines his hero not being proud of him. He is consciously aware that maybe he doesn't belong as a Nazi. After all, only Jews love ugly things.
