    Scarlett Johansson’s smile. Nuff said.

Fantastic! There’s moral ambiguity, and then there’s Insomnia. Such an unexpected, nuanced script full of surprises. Rarely did I know where this film was going. Even this early in his career, Nolan holds such tight command over the screen. The cold, wet Alaskan setting fits perfectly with the tone of this film, and Nolan exploits it to full effect. Pacino and Williams take this film to another level as well. Both are spectacular. If you’re in the mood for something a little different in the mystery genre, check this one out.

    A Separation

Been a while since I’ve done a review but holy shit. I had to give this one a review. An absolute masterclass in screenwriting is on display in this one. Every character is fleshed out perfectly and they feel like real people. The moral dilemmas in this film hold no easy answers. The way the script subtly unveils the underlying cultural struggles is perfectly woven into the story without being overbearing. Go into this knowing as little as possible, and it will take you in such an unexpected direction. Utterly heartbreaking and compelling.

It’s always hurts to not enjoy a classic that much. I guess Ridley Scott’s  science fiction just bores the hell out of me. Sure, it’s got some memorable scenes, but I was just so bored. I appreciate it, but I’m not a fan. Sorry.
