Grade: MASTERPIECE (5 out of 5)
Death Don't Have No Mercy
The Phantom Carriage is an eerily affecting parable not too dissimilar from A Christmas Carol, except instead of Christmas spirits it is Death that is central to the story. Without giving away too much, the movie is able to present an incredibly interesting urban legend, while also establishing a thorough character arc. But the real star of the show are the effects. The old grainy tinted black and white mixed with the still impressive ghostly apparition of the Phantom Carriage makes for a timelessly creepy atmosphere.
All this from a movie made almost one hundred years ago.
