Suspiria

Suspiria ★★★★★

This remake is almost as good as the original. It's set amidst the political upheaval brought about by the infamous Baader-Meinhoff Gang aka RAF or Red Army Faction. The Gothic-inspired horror takes place in a radicalized political environment that swirls around as crazily as the dancers in the academy do. It illustrates the weirdly fascinating directions into which culture veers as the radical Left forces West German society to confront its Nazi past while centuries of the occult linger just under the Academy's floorboards. They really blended it all pretty seamlessly. The portrayals of the matrons of the Academy are each and every one so fucking weird. They look old enough to have witnessed the rise and fall of the Third Reich yet are also part of something eternally evil. It lacks the rich dark color of the original but does its own thing pretty well. The portrayal by Tilda Swinton was astonishing, but the entire Academy staff were all so very strange and inspired under the direction of Luca Guadagnino. It's almost impossible not to keep watching with awe and horror. The horror especially is top notch.
