Beautifully shot, but I worry that this is one of those movies like Fight Club where the wrong message will be taken away by some viewers. There’s nothing all that romantic in what McCandless did - he seemingly rejected every bit of kindness showed to him in pursuit of a dream that he was not prepared for. For such a smart kids, he’s really pretty dumb.
When Keener asks “do your folks know where you are?” your heart veritably breaks. Some solid acting from Hirsch, and ultimately it’s probably one of those movies that if watched at different phases of one’s life you’ll take away something very different each time.
