Ryan Conde’s review published on Letterboxd:
Finally got around to seeing this movie and I think we can all agree that it was quite a pleasant surprise. While the movie isn't amazing I still had a lot of fun with this movie. The few problems I have with the movie in no way ruin it but do keep it from being great. The story itself is predictable, some of the humor didn't quite work, and there are some very obvious cliches that you could see coming from a mile away. However, the movie manages to work thanks to so many great aspects. The cinematography is good, the musical score is great, the direction is solid, the humor got some really good laughs out of me, the characters are likable and funny, the concept is pretty cool and original, the visual effects look fantastic especially the game of Free City itself, the cameos are fun and some of them are really funny, the few emotional moments are effective and work well, and the best thing about this movie is the cast. Many of the actors like Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, and Taika Waititi do a fantastic job but the main standout of the entire film is Ryan Reynolds. Reynolds not only does a great job in the main role but he still retains the charisma that we've come to expect from him and has many funny moments. Overall, Free Guy is a very weird movie but one that absolutely deserves to be seen by everyone. It does have a fairly predictable story and a lot of cliches but thanks to a cool and original concept, great visuals, a lot of really funny moments, and an amazing cast it makes the movie work in the end. If you're looking for a good comedy with a lot of laughs then I would recommend seeing this movie. I also recommend it to gamers because I'm sure they will appreciate it and like it a lot more. Can't wait to see what they do with the recently announced sequel!
