    My favorite film - I see this as pretty much unmatched in terms of formal brilliance, profound allegorical applications, and depth of emotional expression. Anno's effort to "burn" his feelings into film + his incredibly strong understanding of semiotics come through in every searing image and cut of this plunge into/ascension out of hell (and you can't fully understand and feel love without fully understanding people's/nature's capacity for violence).
