I was entering middle school around the time this film takes place. For that, it's both frustrating and lovely to witness a period piece about my own generation's time. Man, did it feel so 2002. And man, how nostalgic I am for it. And, man, how confusing growing up feels.
But Greta Gerwig gets that, and it's beautiful. This was one of those rare movies that I couldn't find a single flaw in. Gerwig is a wonderful actress, so she gathers an ensemble that delivers every emotional beat without abandoning the singe of humor. It's a very entertaining film for something so small - but credit for that goes completely to Gerwig; and especially to her screenplay. It's undeniable that she's the reason we have so many wonderful performances here.
