Burning ★★★★½

A title which invokes not so much the physical act of burning -- that would imply a passion -- but its byproduct of smoke, which obscures things, disappears into the air, and lingers invisibly. The very first shot is of an unseen Jong-su marked only by the smoldering exhaust of his cigarette, and most of the film follows thusly, predicated upon the liminalism of imagining the presence of a thing versus forgetting that it isn’t there... Need to see it again, but currently Burning is looking to be my favorite movie of the year.
