Cube 2: Hypercube

Cube 2: Hypercube ★★½

I thought CUBE 2: HYPERCUBE would make a great double feature with HAZE, and while it does make sense conceptually, it was a bit of a letdown after Shinya Tsukamoto‘s demented nightmare of a film. I should‘ve reversed the watch order.

Don‘t get me wrong, C2 is entertaining enough, with some cool „gags“, as long as you don’t think about it too hard. It’s been a long time since I‘ve seen Vincenzo Natali‘s CUBE, so I‘m unable to draw a concrete comparison between them. From what I remember, this one doesn’t seem to add anything of importance to it. Yes, the rooms have gotten more sophisticated and there’s some kind of explanation for the „who“ and the „why“, which turns out to be useless because it all just doesn’t mean anything to the audience.

Ultimately C2 is simply a lazily written and played safe, studio-produced sequel to a cool low budget indie sci-fi film (go figure). Did anyone really expect anything else?... But for what it is, it’s okay.
