Once a Week I change my Four Favorite Films to reflect the top four of a recent list I put together.
Spirited Away 2001
Wow, that wasn’t a movie that was an experience! Chihiro, it probably goes without explaining, is a whiny young adolescent whose parents are moving and she is obviously not having it. As they arrive immediately they come across this abandoned Theme park, as the parents find a place to eat, the begin to consume voraciously and are turned into pigs. This leave Chihiro with Haku to fend for herself, find and job and try to be accepted (There is so…
Jurassic Park 1993
Every now at then you come across movie going experiences that transcend and change you and your love for film. I remember being 13 years old and standing outside in line in front of the tiny old theater, the Granada in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, waiting to see this movie with my Dad. My Dad had read the book and was incredibly excited to see this, I was excited to see Dinosaurs, but I was thinking how good could they possibly…
Scream VI 2023
Whoever is producing these movies, knows what makes Scream great and is honestly leaning heavily into it. Scream 5 was an excellent “Requel” that brought in a new young cast, an interesting story and just the right about of self referential scenes to keep you in. Scream 6 improves on all of that and then some! The Gore, the Opening Scene, the Stakes, the pacing, the immediate tension, putting everything in the city, were all brilliant moves.
Also I loved…
Train to Busan 2016
Been working my way through South Korean films that I haven’t seen… any recommendations?!?!?
Train to Busan is so much fun! Yeah there are some plot holes, but when the movie is this well
Paced that is easy to overlook. Some of my favorite things about this movie:
1. The young actress who played Su-an - WOW!
2. Actual emotional stakes in this movie, I love a movie that isn’t afraid to kill off characters. (Take note Marvel)
How have I not seen this movie sooner than this!?! Her has been on my watchlist for a while and thanks to Letterboxd I’ve been able to keep track of stuff I’ve missed. Now that I got that out of the way, HER is honestly a beautiful movie. Joaquin Phoenix plays Theodore, who is excellent in this film. Most of the film you feel sorry for Theodore, but as it progresses you also realize that Theodore is part of the…
Aftersun is a beautiful and haunting film. This movie uses home video footage so beautifully and the way that this film is structured and so intentional with the story telling is honestly masterful. Paul Mescal is amazing in this as you just watch him just honestly be human. As a Dad, he didn’t feel like a caricature of a dad, but he seemed like a young Father, who was struggling, not prepared, depressed, confused and trying his hardest to give…
