The Phantom of the Opera

The Phantom of the Opera ★★★½

"They think they can match wits with Erik" doesn't inspire as much dread as "They think they can match wits with The Phantom." That's the problem with The Phantom of the Opera. As a horror movie, it barely works. As a gothic romantic thriller, it's quite good. It's ominous but rarely pays it off. It's littered with amazing ornate set pieces and costumes with these big operatic (duh) facial expressions. You can't help but appreciate the ingenuity and by extension it's place in film history
