All Quiet on the Western Front

All Quiet on the Western Front ★★★★

While the initial impact of the film is lessened if you have seen the far superior Lewis Milestone 1930 adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s novel. Edward Berber’s twenty-first-century rendition still brings a harrowing sensibility as you are shown the horrors of war through the eyes of Felix Kammerer’s idealistic Paul Bäumer who inspired to enlist into the German war effort in the closing months of the First World War only to discover the harsh reality of the desperate German command as they take insurmountable losses.
