Yes, OK, a young man in a dead-end relationship has an affair with an older woman. But it's not 'The Graduate', and it's a little unfair to make the comparison. To read the reviews you'd think there'd never been another movie about a young man having an affair with an older woman. Seriously. It's a standard Hollywood trope, so what? They let him wallow more than was necesssary before finally finding his backbone, but the run-up, with plenty of laugh-out-loud moments from Landecker, Schwartzman and others, was a pleasure to watch. Not earth-shattering, but a nice balance of quirky and maudlin. And nobody's pretending it's meant to be Hoffman/Bancroft. Nobody would even try.
