One of the nice things about foreign films is that you can see a thesis carried out that might be seen as gauche or problematic in a domestic context. This is a movie that cheerfully says that most good directors are broken people, comparing the act of editing to the necessity of "cutting" out basic parts of life in order to achieve your artistic dreams: relationships, social skills, hobbies, (hygiene?)

I'm very surprised that what impressed and excited me most in this was not the hyper subjective, formalist theatrics that I usually come to Eva for, but that slow paced first hour. Classic Japanese cinema, slice of life anime, Ghibli films, and even old horror manga: these are just a few of the things I was amazed to be so reminded of in this movie. You went and did it, Anno. I'm happy for you.

In between the release of 3.0 and this movie I completed an undergraduate degree, a masters, and a thesis.
