I remember when this came out & def know I’ve seen at least some of it on tv around that time, but might as well be a first watch. It just works so well if you’re on its wavelength, props to Dickerson for seamlessly blending in the 70’s blaxplo into the 2001 setting and not being afraid to get silly. RIP Ricky Harris, who is the MVP here. Snoop dropped this & The Wash (one of the great unheralded comedic performances of this young century) in the same year, beat that ‘95 De Niro.

Still seems unbelievable that this was a huge hit & is a canon classic, and not more of a love it or hate it case. Nothing else has this specific mood or rhythm, scenes, like the score, stop & start and just lulls you in every step of the way. Really dug the brief showcases of the girls in the academy this time, especially Olga, she’s just all-time great.

A dark, seedy look at the media & one person's drive to where he wants to be, Nightcrawler is a lovely, thought-provoking thriller shot in a dark Los Angeles akin to Refn's Drive. Jake Gyllenhaal gives an astounding performance as a man who is alone by choice, but thrives to be big & known through the underbelly of freelance crime journalism, with a solid Rene Russo as his news counterpart. It's a relentless thriller that will leave you thinking when the end credits roll & an admirable directorial debut from Dan Gilroy.

Wow. Even with all the praise this has gotten, I did not expect to love this like I did. The way Wong Kar Wai shot this is so unique, it's breathtaking to witness, along with the lovely performances by the leads & a killer soundtrack, this film told this story of unrequited love, loneliness, & marriage on the rocks so beautifully with so much style, so much earnestness & realism that itcompletely enthralled me. It's a must for me now to watch the other two films in this trilogy to complete the full story of these characters.
