Manhunter

Manhunter

Did anyone else confuse this for years with that really early point and click serial killer adventure game, Manhunter (1988)? As a child Sierra adherent, I remember thinking this looked especially freaky.

Glad to finally set the record/recollection straight though, because however disinterested I may typically be in both serial killer stories and police procedurals, this is better, an unsettling neon fever dream about seeing, dreaming, and voyeurism. Thankfully, unlike so much serial killer media, it does not fulfill any voyeuristic impulses in the viewer. When we do see the killer, it's not at his work but at his most human (though in some of the most overtly surreal moments of the film as well). Not afraid to take weird risks, even if not all completely work. Perversely compelling performances from Brian Cox and Tom Noonan. Soundtrack cues forgo the expected Tangerine Dream for ex-TG Klaus Schulze and sleek ambient new wave (I could lose the Iron Butterfly, but apparently that was inspired by a real killer consulted for the film). Forensic Psychology as we know it may be largely a Hollywood construct, but here it gets us past the dull policework and into richer themes.
