Watching this as an adult, I experienced a much more nuanced film than the one I loved as a kid. A satirical dissection of American society which takes aim at numerous issues - foreign policy, labour rights, consumerism and privatisation - all at the height of Reaganism.

The barren and industrial landscape of 80s recession-hit Detroit perfectly doubles up as the dystopian city of the future. An indictment as to what Capitalism will do to cities of industry.

    Die Hard

The American media are portrayed as dumb. The police incompetent. The FBI as trigger-happy lunatics. In contrast, the "terrorists" are actually a group of international, stylish, intelligent, highly organised theives - who are stealing from Nakatomi to punish them for corporate greed. 'Die Hard' brilliantly flips the dynamics of typical good/bad guy portrayals, whilst Bruce Willis brings the violence, action and humour expected of a blockbuster. Jan de Bont's cinematography, Michael Kamen's score and McTiernan's direction make 'Die Hard' one of the best American action films of the 80s - along with 'RoboCop', 'Lethal Weapon' and 'Aliens'.

Werner Herzog's beautiful documentary about wild bear enthusiast Timothy Treadwell. The film consists of Treadwell's own footage, as well as typical Herzog interviews, reconstructions and narration. This is not just an 'interesting' documentary, but also an example of great filmmaking. The film is also accompanied by a sublime original score by guitar maestro Richard Thompson.
