Pre-episode 9 rewatch
My feelings towards "The Last Jedi" seem to be constantly changing over the past 2 years. I really enjoyed it after the first theatrical viewing due to all the unexpected twists on the Star Wars formula. Then rewatching it for the first time (albeit as an in-flight movie) I felt really bored by all the unnecessary sideplots in the middle section. Now on my third rewatch and I'm back to being impressed and enamored by it! Go figure.
The casino planet scenes are the only bits that I could really do without. They're absolutely boring and add nothing. Everything else I still find very interesting thematically and as cliche-breaking twisting of the formula.
No, I have 0 beef with how they treated Luke. His character here provides for some interesting depth to what used to be a simplistic black/white struggle in the older films.
So, I'm bumping it half a star back to 4. It's certainly a divisive film, but it takes guts to go against the grain and that's exactly what Rian Johnson did here. Open mind required.
