Uzumaki ★★★★

Day 29 of Halloween 2022

Some of these editing choices are DIVINE. This absolutely nails Ito’s collision of grotesque and absurd, but it’s able to maintain its own idiosyncratic sense of style too. The script does drag a tiny bit at points, and I don’t think the ending is as successful as the original, but I respect it for what it is. The filmmaking talent and sheer celebration of the weird on display here is incredible. I do think a better adaptation is definitely possible, though; I just don’t think we’re ever likely to see that adaptation, so I’m really happy to have this one. We’ll see about that anime if it ever comes out.
