    Day 31 of Halloween 2022 (Part 1)

This just didn’t work for me. I hated the pacing, it felt like every scene was just rushing to get to the next one without any time to live with the characters and get to know them better. And the visuals didn’t really grab me either??? Which hurts to say for a Selick film especially. Feels bad all around since these are two phenomenal filmmakers who could have been a perfect match.

Some of these editing choices are DIVINE. This absolutely nails Ito’s collision of grotesque and absurd, but it’s able to maintain its own idiosyncratic sense of style too. The script does drag a tiny bit at points, and I don’t think the ending is as successful as the original, but I respect it for what it is. The filmmaking talent and sheer celebration of the weird on display here is incredible. I do think a…

    Day 27 of Halloween 2022

The creeping dread of this one, building the quietly palpable despair of a small town struck with a mysterious plague. The way it masterfully unravels into abject terror, and the interplay between the two moods, is tense, ambiguous, and disturbing. This is a long-ass slow burn but I love the way it forces the viewer to sit in the discomfort, feeling the desolation, the increasingly malignant atmosphere. There's a lot going on here and it definitely warrants a second watch, but what an incredible thing.

    Day 26 of Halloween 2022

Fucking brutal. It's easy to revel in the absolute sickos-at-the-window of it all, and the movie knows it, but the way it tries to moralize about the afternoon's maximalist ultraviolence got a few eye rolls out of me if I'm being honest. Smashing the rapist's head in doesn't feel good because you're just like him, it feels good because fuck him. I'm not quite ready to meet the film on its social cynicism, and it constantly undermines itself by trying to force a half-baked message, but I can't deny that it's a bloody, gruesome, terrifyingly bad (complimentary) time.

I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to see this considering me and my tastes, but also hey It Follows we need to have a little chat.

I think some of the expository stuff takes away from the emotional impact but overall it’s pretty damn good, I didn’t expect anything less from such a classic.

    Day 24 of Halloween 2022

Strange things happen in the night, such horrors under the watchful eye of the moon. It’s a little rough around the edges, strikingly brutal at times but owing an off-kilter sense of warmth (in part, at least) to its fast cuts, vivid colors, and equally vivid cast of characters. A surreal, effervescent nightmare, grotesque with a softly beating heart at its core. It’s not for everyone but it’s full of beautifully and disgustingly unforgettable imagery. Midori’s every emotion is painfully, deeply, horrendously palpable, all culminating in a single haunting scream.

    Day 21 of Halloween 2022

I'm not a "this movie was too long" type of bitch, but I think this movie might just be too long for me. I like a lot of the parts but it feels like two movies loosely duct taped together, still got some of the flair of the other two but not enough to feel as special, and the climax is boring as hell.
