Manhunter ★★★★

A bit more conventional than Mann's best works, perhaps, but I've long carried a torch for it and a second viewing only affirmed my love. Mann's films are all generic in their broad strokes, anyway; the details and style are what elevate them, and Manhunter is no different, at once meticulously restrained (cutting away from or around every act of violence until the climax, and even then the jarring, nearly silent-film-esque editing at once heightens and mutes the catharsis) and richly, impressionistically expressive (that dream sequence! and while I don't harbor much nostalgia for the '80s, personally, the needle drops here are dated in the best way).
