One could think being unlike anything ever made and playing out exactly like the premise and the director attached would indicate is contradictory, but it's really not. The labyrinthic script might actually be articulating a grand thesis on the semiotics of art and the inherent performative act of both establishing and deteriorating intimacy, yet something about how Kiarostami keeps playing with the layers, reflections and cadences (and obviously my outright inability to fully absorb this at the required intellectual level) says that the simplest human moments within the orchestrated confusion are in fact the point. Binoche doing that in three different languages, practically at the same time, is insane.
