Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again ★★★½

Who said prequels can't be fun? The idea of rhyming the two timelines in a way that call backs to the conflict of the first film, but that also builds towards a place of emotional sincerity in reaffirming the intense connection between a mother and a daughter adds a fresh narrative dynamic to such an inherently thinly-structured musical and, most importantly, allows for the opportunity to go all-out on Lily James and 70's costumes, so it's pretty much a flawless decision. Can't say for sure if the songs are a little under-arranged, the movie's not mixed properly, or if the screening's sound system left a lot to be desired, but the fact is that a handful of sequences lack that last oomph to be as delightful as they should, yet it's great to see this follow-up keeping the tradition of having spectacularly obvious day for nights.
