The Docks of New York

The Docks of New York ★★★★

Silent-era pictures naturally have affinity to what is now known as mood pieces and this is an outstanding exemplar of that. There's just a couple of sets, the conflict is rather straightforward and the filmmaking, at a first glance, could be seen as unremarkable, but the atmosphere is constructed in such a way that makes everything seem dense, exquisitely steeped in melancholy, cynicism and romance all at once. Great ending, as well.
