    The Truth

    ★★★★

Beautiful, simple, and in hilariously somber fashion, while also revealing in all the complexities hiding underneath. Whether a lower class family in Japan, or a dysfunctional family of talents in France, Kore-eda always seeks the truth amidst all the dynamic. Not as self-contained or emotionally driven as his other films, but still resonant nonetheless. The mark of a truly brilliant filmmaker who shows that he can transcend cultural barriers and draw out what is necessary for the moment. This was definitely my thing.

Also he was very lovely and sweet in person.

“Sweetie, guys like that don't hang out in Rochefort”
This is pretty much perfect to me. About midway through, I caught myself locked under the spell of Jacques Demy’s love for cinema, brimming with colour, passion and music. All the characters well-realised, the longing and aching desire palpable and seamlessly felt off the screen. I saw a lot of the influences this had on La La Land, yet I find them both dreamy and unique in their own beautiful little ways. I see myself watching this a couple more thousand times in the future.
