Moonlight ★★★★½

Moonlight is poetry in every sense of the word. Heartbreaking performances (Mahershala Ali is the standout in my opinion), a near-perfect script, and stunning direction make this the most effective film about gay men since Andrew Haigh's Weekend and Terrence Davies' The Long Day Closes. I still felt like something was missing though. I can't put my finger on it, but there was something that held me back from fully falling into the world Jenkins created. Maybe I just need to see it again.

Also "In moonlight, black boys look blue." is the most beautiful line of the year and possibly of all time.
